at the Veterinary Faculty of Milano - Italy

Second Announcement - Call for Abstracts

—————

Invitation

Dear colleagues,
we cordially invite you to the 2nd International Equitation Science Symposium which will be held on Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th September 2006 in Milano, Italy.
The venue is the Veterinary Faculty of Milano, Italy. We intend to make you experience a stimulating and memorable event from beginning to end. The latest research in horse behaviour and welfare applied to equitation will be presented as well as a very interesting practical session. The symposium should be the meeting place for all involved in the horse world, making a bridge between academia and practice.
In addition to the Symposium you are invited to experience the richness of Italian cultural expressions like art, architecture and the diversity of its natural environments.
Please notice that the dates have been changed from the First Announcement in order to allow participants to attend the session "Effect of management and housing on horse welfare" of the 57th meeting of the European Association of Animal Production (Antalya, Turkey)

Symposium Venue

Contrary to what had been stated in the First Announcement, the congress will be held at the old seat of the Veterinary Faculty which is located in Via Celoria 10, within the district of Cittą Studi, in Milano and the practical session will be held at the Stable Rosenthal - Cascina Longora in Carpiano (transports will be provided). Included in the registration fee, participants will have lunch at the University refectory. Coffee breaks will be served. Cittą Studi (Study city) is located in the east of Milan and as the name suggests, is the University district, home to the Polytechnic and several chemistry, biology and veterinary departments. Many of the buildings here were constructed in the '20s, '30s and '40s and the overall feel is that of a charming residential area with trees on every street.
Being an ancient city, Milano bears traces of many ages adapting and interpreting them: Milano's heart has always been lively and intense! The Historical Centre, incorporates the fashion district, the Castello Sforzesco, the glorious Piazza della Scala and other areas of historical interest. In the refectory of the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, one of the absolute masterpieces of history is kept: Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper. Starting from September 1999 there is a new monument in Milan: a big bronze horse directly inspired by Leonardo's drawings. Build in the United States by the "Leonardo's Horse Foundation" it has been donated to the city of Milan. You can find more information on the city of Milano on tourist office web site

How to get to Milano

Milano is very accessible from other cities within Italy, Europe and worldwide. It is served by three airports, Malpensa, Linate and Orio al Serio. Most intercontinental flights land at Malpensa, but it is obviously important to know which airport you will be using.
Milan Linate International Airport (LIN) is located five miles (eight kilometers) east of Milan city center. A one terminal airport, Milan Linate International Airport handles both domestic and international flights. It is the closest airport to the Congress venue.
Milan Malpensa Intercontinental Airport (MXP) is located twenty-eight miles (forty-four kilometers) northwest of Milan city center. There are two terminals at Milan Malpensa Intercontinental Airport; Terminal One is Malpensa Ovest, Terminal Two is Malpensa Nord. Between the two Terminals of Malpensa, a free shuttle bus is available every 20 minutes about for twenty-four hours a day. Milan can be reached by car, by train or by bus. Taxis are available at the Arrivals of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. The fee to the centre of Milan is about Eur 70. You can reach Milan directly from the Terminal 1 by Ferrovie Nord Milano Trains. Malpensa Express trains connect the Terminal 1 of Malpensa directly with the centre of Milan (Cadorna Railway Station - connection with the Tube red and green lines). Trains depart every 30 minutes and the journey from the Terminal 1 of Malpensa to Cadorna Station lasts about 40 minutes. Malpensa is connected by bus not only with Milan, but also with Linate and some towns in Lombardy, Piedmont, Ligury and Switzerland. To go down town by car, take the State Road SS 336 till Busto Arsizio. Then take the motorway A8 (Autostrada A8 Laghi) till Milan.
Milan Orio al Serio Airport
is located twenty-nine miles (forty-six kilometers) northeast of Milan city center. Milan can be reached by car or by bus. Buses depart every 30 minutes and arrive at "Central Station" or "Lambrate Station". Many "Low Cost" airlines land at Orio al Serio Airport.
Arriving by Car
If heading to Milan from Rome or Florence, take the A1 Autostrada. If arriving from Venice, the A4 should be used. Although Italy's A roads are of high quality, traffic will become very heavy and slow moving approaching Milan. This combined with a parking ban throughout much of Milan city center means that the best advice is to leave your car on the outskirts and take public transport into the city.

Preliminary Scientific Programme

The scientific programme will include plenary and poster sessions, as well as a practical session. There will be 4 main topics which were voted as priority areas by the attendees of IESS 2005 and free papers which will be grouped into adequate sessions:

1. Examine the pros and cons of working and training juvenile and immature horses. How much is too much and how early is too soon?
2. Assess the indicators and effects of learned helplessness.
3. Analyse the various types of flexion (used in various training systems) and how to measure them effectively.
4. Assess the benefits of adopting scientifically verified behaviour modification techniques.

Instruction for Abstracts (see sample in this page)

Abstracts must be written in English and not exceed 300 words, excluding title, authors’ name and addresses. Use an MS Word-compatible word processing program. Please use Times New Roman 12 pt, single spaced in the main text. Titles of abstracts, name(s) and institution address(es) should be centred. Write the title of the presentation on the first line, the authors’ names on the second line, the addresses on the next line (or more), followed by the main text. Please insert a blank line in between all parts of the abstract, e.g. before title and authors’ names. A blank line should precede the text. The text should outline clearly and concisely the main findings or premise without reference to other text. A horse’s response to training may be influenced by its learning ability. Handling and riding horses can expose both handler and horse to a considerable risk of injury but this risk can be reduced by employing correct handling procedures that can facilitate learning in horses………………………………………………………………..
